The UP Sainik Schools Society has opened online applications for admission to Class 6 and Class 9 for the 2027-28 session at its two schools: Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey UP Sainik School, Lucknow and UP Sainik School, Gorakhpur. Applications opened on 10 September 2026 and close on 25 October 2026 — that’s barely four weeks from today.

If your family lives in Uttar Pradesh, this deserves your attention this week. Here’s the thing most parents miss: this is not the AISSEE. UP Sainik Schools run their own entrance exam, on their own dates, with their own rules. A child can apply to both AISSEE and the UP Sainik School exam — they don’t clash, and they double your child’s chances.

The eligibility has one non-negotiable condition: both the applicant and the applicant’s father must be domiciled in Uttar Pradesh. No UP domicile, no application — this one is strict.

• Class 6: born between 2 July 2015 and 1 January 2018 (both dates inclusive); must have passed Class 5 from a recognised school.
• Class 9: born between 2 July 2012 and 1 January 2015 (both dates inclusive); must have passed Class 8.
• Girls: admitted at Gorakhpur for both Class 6 and 9, and at Lucknow for Class 9. Lucknow Class 6 is boys only — check this before choosing preferences.

Application fee and exam pattern

The application fee is ₹1,000 for all categories if you apply by 25 October; with late fee (26–31 October), it becomes ₹2,000. My honest advice: don’t wait for the late window. Paying double for the same form is the worst kind of last-minute tax.

Frequently asked questions

Is the UP Sainik School exam the same as AISSEE? No. AISSEE is conducted by the NTA for the 33 central Sainik Schools and new Sainik Schools; its 2027 notification is not yet released. The UP Sainik School entrance is conducted by the UP Sainik Schools Society for its two UP schools. They are separate exams with separate forms, fees, and dates.

Can my child apply to both AISSEE and UP Sainik School? Yes — and you should, if eligible. The exams are months apart (UP exam: 20 December 2026; AISSEE 2027: tentatively 31 January 2027), so preparation for one directly helps the other.
