🔄 Last verified: 26 September 2026 — ⚠️ NTA has not released the 2027 bulletin yet. The age cutoffs below are 🔶 PROJECTIONS — derived by shifting the AISSEE 2026 bulletin (via TOI, citing NTA) one year forward. Final confirmation comes with the bulletin (expected October 2026).

The age rule is AISSEE’s strictest. Low marks? You can always try again next year. But miss the age cutoff by a single day, and the form is rejected outright — no appeal, no second chance. So read this carefully, and match it against your child’s birth date.

How to calculate age (3 worked examples)

The golden rule: age is counted as on 31 March 2027 — not today’s date, and not the exam date (31 January 2027) either. This single misunderstanding disqualifies more applications than you’d believe.

Example 1 — eligible ✅ Born 15 June 2015. On 31 March 2027, the child is 11 years and 9 months old — inside the 10–12 band → eligible for Class 6 (projected).

Example 2 — not eligible ❌ Born 2 April 2017. On 31 March 2027, the child is 9 years, 11 months and 29 days — two days short of 10 → not eligible. Painful, but the rule is the rule.

Example 3 — Class 9, eligible ✅ Born 10 October 2012. On 31 March 2027, the child is 14 years and 5 months — inside the 13–15 band → eligible for Class 9 (projected).

Do girls have a different age rule?

No — the age criteria are identical for girls. The difference is only in seats: in the 33 established schools, 10% of Class 6 vacancies or 10 seats, whichever is more, are reserved for girls ✅ (per the AISSAC SOP). Is there any age relaxation?

Straight answer: SC/ST candidates get relaxation in qualifying marks (the 25%-per-section + 40%-aggregate rule doesn’t apply to them ✅) — but there is generally no relaxation in age. This has held steady for years. The bulletin, of course, has the final word.

1. The birth certificate is the final proof. Not the school record, not an affidavit — the municipal birth certificate. Get it made and keep it ready.
2. Enter the DOB in the form with extreme care. A single wrong digit creates problems that are nearly impossible to fix later.
3. Too young this year? That’s not a defeat. Start the 15-month early-preparation plan for 2028 right now — that’s the toppers’ path, and it begins with an advantage most aspirants don’t have: time.

Documents that prove age

Keep these ready for the application form and for counselling:

• Birth certificate (municipal corporation / nagar palika) — the most authentic proof ✅
• School transfer certificate (TC) — the DOB printed on it gets cross-checked
• Aadhaar card — as supporting proof

⚠️ The date of birth must match across all three documents. If the birth certificate and the school record disagree, get it corrected now — after the form is submitted, corrections are practically impossible.

Q1. My child turns exactly 10 on 31 March 2027 — eligible? Yes. The 10–12 range is inclusive, so a 31 March 2017 birth date qualifies (projected).

Q2. Can the date of birth be corrected after submitting the form? NTA usually opens a limited correction window (the 2026 cycle had one), but DOB is a critical field and corrections there are difficult. Get it right the first time.

Q3. Must a Class 9 applicant have passed Class 8? Yes — from a recognised school ✅ (per the 2026 bulletin).

Q4. Do children of defence personnel get age relaxation? No. The defence quota sits in seats (25% of the remainder ✅), not in age.

Q5. Could the bulletin change the age rule? The pattern has been stable for years — a change is 🔶 unlikely. But the final word is always the bulletin’s (expected October 2026).

Q6. Which date actually matters — the exam date or 31 March? 31 March 2027. Always 31 March. Not the exam date, not today’s date.
