Last verified: 19 October 2026 (Monday). The exam date (6 December 2026), paper pattern, 50%-per-subject rule, and bilingual/no-negative-marking details below are CONFIRMED from the official RIMCEE-2026 information bulletin and two independent education portals describing it. This is an update/explainer, not breaking news — the bulletin has been public since September.

The milestone

The RIMCEE 2026 written examination — the gateway to Class 8 at the Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun — is 48 days away, on Sunday, 6 December 2026. Applications closed weeks ago, so this is no longer a “should we apply” question. It is a preparation question, and with seven weeks left, the honest answer is: the paper pattern itself should be deciding what gets studied this week.

The three papers, exactly as the bulletin lays them out

Subject Type Questions Marks Duration Minimum to qualify
English Descriptive, pen and paper 45 125 2 hours 50%
General Knowledge Objective (MCQ) 75 75 1 hour 50%
Mathematics Descriptive, pen and paper 30 200 1 hour 30 mins 50%
Total 150 400 4 hrs 30 mins

Two things in this table surprise most families. First, Mathematics carries half the total marks (200 of 400) in just 30 descriptive questions — roughly 6–7 marks per question. Second, the qualifying bar is 50% in each subject separately, not on the total. A candidate can score 300/400 overall and still be out if English lands at 45%. That per-subject rule, more than any cutoff, is what ends campaigns. (CONFIRMED)

The paper is bilingual (English and Hindi) except the English section itself, there is no negative marking, and if a question’s Hindi translation is ambiguous, the English version is treated as final per NTA. Syllabus-wise, Maths draws on Class 6–7 topics (LCM/HCF, fractions, ratio and proportion, percentage, profit and loss, simple interest, area and perimeter, time and work), English covers unseen passages, composition, picture writing, letters, grammar and idioms, and GK spans current affairs, sciences, social sciences and logical questions. (CONFIRMED from the bulletin as described by two portals)

What to finish this week (19–25 October)

With 48 days left, this is the week to lock the mechanics, not learn new chapters:

  1. Maths working speed. Thirty descriptive questions in 90 minutes is three minutes per question — with full written working shown. Do two timed 30-question sets this week and measure the actual minutes-per-question, not the score.
  2. English writing volume. Two papers are pen-and-paper, not MCQ ticks — handwriting speed, clear sentences and neat working matter as much as knowing the topic. One unseen passage + one composition, written out fully, every day.
  3. The 50% floor per subject. Identify the weakest subject honestly and give it the extra hour — the exam is three separate 50% gates, not one 400-mark race.
  4. GK as a daily habit, not a cram. Seventy-five MCQs in one hour rewards breadth; 20 minutes of current affairs plus science/social-science revision daily beats a weekend binge.
  5. No negative marking = attempt everything. Make this a reflex now: on the GK paper especially, an unanswered question is a wasted mark.

After the written, qualifiers face a 50-mark viva voce (also 50% to pass, conducted through the State Governments) and then a medical examination — we covered the viva stage in detail last week.
