Almost every RIMC aspirant’s calendar stops at 6 December 2026 — the written exam. That is a mistake. The written paper is stage one of three, and the second stage, the viva-voce, is the one most families start preparing for far too late. Consider this your early warning, 49 days out.
Last verified: 18 October 2026 · Written exam 6 December 2026 ✅ (exam-cycle pattern, NTA intake schedule) · Written pattern 400 marks: Maths 200, English 125, GK 75 ✅ · 50% per subject to qualify for viva ✅ · Viva-voce 50 marks, written-qualified candidates only ✅ · Exact viva dates not announced — intimation follows written results 🔶

The Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, selects its Class 8 cadets through a written exam, a viva-voce, and a medical examination — in that order:
| Stage | What it is | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Written exam | English (125), Mathematics (200), General Knowledge (75) | 400 |
| 2. Viva-voce | Oral test of intelligence, personality, communication | 50 |
| 3. Medical | Fitness exam at a military hospital | Qualifying |
| Total for merit | Written + viva-voce | 450 |
Only candidates who score at least 50% in each written subject are called for the viva. That bar is per subject, not aggregate — a brilliant maths score cannot rescue a GK paper below 37.5 marks. This is where many strong students quietly fall: they aim for a good total instead of protecting every single paper.
The viva-voce is not a second written exam conducted out loud. Multiple education sources describe it as an assessment of intelligence, personality, confidence, and communication skills, with general awareness thrown in. In practice, that means a panel conversation — questions about the child, their interests, school life, current affairs they can discuss with opinions, and basic reasoning.
Two things parents should understand:
One source also cites a 50% qualifying bar in the viva itself — treat that as worth preparing for but verify it against the official December-cycle notice when it is published.
You cannot prepare for a personality test in a weekend, but you can start the habits now:
RIMC takes a small number of cadets each cycle — roughly three dozen across all states and union territories, with most states sending a single candidate. When the intake is that small, the written exam filters; the viva ranks. Two children with similar written totals can end several places apart on the final 450-mark merit list because of 20–30 viva marks. Start treating the viva as a real paper — because it is one.
What is the RIMCEE 2026 viva-voce? It is a 50-mark oral stage held only for candidates who score at least 50 percent in each written subject. It tests intelligence, personality, and communication, and its marks feed into the final merit list.
When will the RIMCEE 2026 viva-voce be held? The exact date is not announced yet. Written results are published as state-wise and All-India merit lists on rimc.edu.in, and viva-voce intimation follows for qualified candidates.
Do you need 50 percent in the viva too? At least one education source cites a 50 percent qualifying bar for the viva as well, but this should be confirmed against the official notice for the December 2026 cycle when it is released.
What comes after the viva-voce in RIMC selection? A medical examination at a military hospital. Only medically fit candidates are finally selected, and the final merit combines written and viva-voce scores.
