Every year the same confusion shows up in our inbox: “Is the admission process really different for a New Sainik School?” Yes — it genuinely is different, and understanding the difference now, before the AISSEE 2027 form opens, will save you from picking the wrong schools in a hurry.
New Sainik Schools (NSS) — the ones approved under the Defence Ministry’s public-private partnership model, of which the Defence Minister announced 100 more in March 2026 — fill their Sainik School vertical seats through two separate routes:
Route 1 — the 40% AISSEE route (Category ‘A’). A minimum of 40% of seats is filled purely on the candidate’s rank in the All India Merit List of the AISSEE. Domicile and category do not matter here — with one named exception (Kranthiveera Sangolli Rayanna Sainik School, Belagavi). Candidates can opt for any New Sainik School in India at counselling time. This is the route for every outside student.
Route 2 — the 60% school route (Category ‘B’). Up to 60% of seats are reserved for students already studying in that same approved school — specifically Class 5 students willing to join the Sainik School vertical, ranked on a school-wise merit list from a qualifying test. Leftover 60%-route vacancies spill back to the 40% AISSEE pool.

What is the 40% route in New Sainik Schools?
A minimum of 40% of seats in approved New Sainik Schools are filled on the basis of the All India Merit List of the AISSEE. Domicile and category are not considered for this route, and candidates can opt for any New Sainik School in India at counselling time.
Who can apply through the 60% route?
The 60% route is only for students already studying in that particular approved New Sainik School — it is filled on a school-wise merit list from a qualifying test. Outside candidates cannot apply through this route; they use the 40% AISSEE route.
Can my daughter apply to a New Sainik School?
Yes. Girls are eligible for AISSEE and New Sainik School admission, subject to the school’s stated boys/girls/neutral seat split for that year. The girls’ quota in Sainik Schools is 10%.
Are Class 9 admissions open in New Sainik Schools?
Only in a limited way. In the 2026 cycle, Class 9 admission in New Sainik Schools was restricted to 19 schools that had completed Class 8 in the Sainik School vertical, and only for leftover vacant seats.
