“New Sainik School” and “Sainik School” — the names sound nearly identical, but the two are not the same thing. And that difference matters enormously, because it hits you at exactly one moment: choice filling during AISSAC counselling, when you’re ranking schools on a screen and every click feels permanent. The new Sainik Schools PPP model is worth understanding before that night — so let’s do it now, calmly and clearly.
The 33 original Sainik Schools are run entirely by the government — under the Ministry of Defence, through the Sainik Schools Society. Government land, government management, government rules.
New Sainik Schools run on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. In plain terms: these are private schools — run by private managements, trusts, or NGOs — that the Sainik Schools Society has approved and affiliated. They follow the Sainik School pattern: admission through AISSEE, a similar curriculum focus, and defence-oriented activities. But the management sitting in the principal’s office is private.
Put simply: a traditional Sainik School is run by the government; a new PPP Sainik School is a private school carrying the government’s tag. That one sentence explains almost every difference you’ll read about below — especially the one about fees.

One honest note: plenty of websites are circulating “complete lists of all 69 schools,” and a good number of those lists are outdated or just wrong. We’ve deliberately not printed a full list here — because the final 2027 list doesn’t exist yet. Publishing a wrong list to look helpful would be worse than telling you to wait. Choice filling, 11 pm. A mother in Lucknow has forty school names on her screen and a sleeping child beside her. She keeps hovering over a new Sainik School forty kilometres away, wondering if “new” means “not as good.” It doesn’t. But it does mean something different — and she’d better know what before she ranks it.
This confuses a lot of parents, so let me be explicit: there is no separate application for new Sainik Schools. You fill one AISSEE form. In AISSAC counselling, both traditional and new schools appear as choices, and you rank them together. The counselling itself is run online by the Sainik Schools Society at pesa.ncog.gov.in — fully online, no counselling fee, running to roughly six rounds.
