Tamil Nadu parents ask me one question more than any other: “Will my child struggle because the school is in English?” If your family speaks Tamil at home and your child studies in a Tamil-medium or bilingual school, the idea of an English-medium residential school can feel like a leap. This guide answers the language question honestly, maps every Tamil Nadu option for AISSEE 2027, and tells you exactly what to do next.

| School | Location | Type | Entry classes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sainik School Amaravathinagar | Udumalpet, Tiruppur district | Official Sainik School (SSS) — residential, English medium | Class 6, Class 9 |
| Srri SPK Public Senior Secondary School | Namakkal | New Sainik School — residential | Class 6 (2026; 2027 EXPECTED) |
Amaravathinagar is one of the oldest Sainik Schools in India. It opened on 16 July 1962 — it was even called Sainik School, Madras until 1975 — on a large campus at Amaravathinagar near Udumalpet in Tiruppur district. It is a CBSE-affiliated, fully residential school running from Class 6 to Class 12, and its stated aim is the same as every Sainik School’s: to prepare cadets academically, physically and psychologically for the National Defence Academy and the armed forces.
It admits students to Class 6 and Class 9 through AISSEE, and — like all 33 established schools — admits both boys and girls to Class 6 now, with roughly 10% of Class 6 seats (or 10 seats, whichever is more) reserved for girls under the standing policy.
The language reality: the medium of instruction is English, full stop. Classes, internal exams, NCC drills, mess conversations — everything runs in English. This is true of every Sainik School in the country, and Amaravathinagar is no exception. If your child is currently in a Tamil-medium school, that does not disqualify them in any way, but you should plan a deliberate English-bridge effort in the months before admission, not after.
In October 2025, the NTA added Srri SPK Public Senior Secondary School, Namakkal to the AISSEE list as a New Sainik School operating on a residential model. It admitted through AISSEE 2026, and its participation in the 2027 cycle is EXPECTED (it will be confirmed when the NTA bulletin releases).
For Tamil Nadu parents, this matters for one strategic reason: the new-school route typically draws fewer applicants than the famous old campus, which often means a lower effective cut-off for a school in your own home state. Amaravathinagar will always be every aspirant’s first preference; putting Namakkal down as a serious preference rather than an afterthought is how many families actually convert a good score into a seat.
This is the section to read twice. Two different things get confused all the time:
1. The school’s medium of instruction — always English. There is no Tamil-medium Sainik School anywhere in India. Do not expect otherwise.
2. The AISSEE question paper medium — your choice. For admission to Class 6, the NTA lets the candidate choose the paper medium from 13 languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Odiya, Assamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Kannada, Urdu and Malayalam. You make this choice in the application form and it cannot be changed later. The booklet is printed bilingually — your chosen language alongside English — and for any ambiguity, the English version (except in the Language section) is treated as final. For Class 9, there is no choice: English only.
So yes — your child can write the AISSEE Class 6 paper in Tamil. But here is the honest advice: if your child can handle the paper in English, choose English. The entire paper is the same syllabus; the English option removes translation ambiguity, and it matches the medium your child will live in for seven years if selected. Choose Tamil only if your child’s English reading is genuinely weak enough that the language of the paper would cost marks — and in that case, start English-bridge work immediately, because the school will not slow down for it.
Under the standing AISSEE policy, 67% of seats at each of the 33 established schools go to home-state candidates — children holding a Tamil Nadu domicile get this edge at Amaravathinagar. The remaining 33% goes to candidates from other states, and within that there are the usual reservations (SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%) plus the defence-wards provision. The same policy reserves about 10% of Class 6 seats for girls. Treat all of this as EXPECTED for 2027 until the NTA bulletin confirms it — the framework has been stable for years, but the bulletin is the final word.
For age: the Class 6 criteria are projected at 10–12 years as on 31 March 2027 (born 1 April 2015 – 31 March 2017), and Class 9 at 13–15 (born 1 April 2012 – 31 March 2014). The detailed age-limit guide walks through the exact date windows.
| Milestone | Expected timing |
|---|---|
| NTA information bulletin | October–November 2026 (not yet released) |
| Application window | October–November 2026 |
| Admit card | Mid-January 2027 |
| AISSEE 2027 exam | 31 January 2027 (tentative, NTA calendar) |
| Result | February–March 2027 |
| E-counselling (AISSAC), medical, final merit | March–June 2027 |
The language question is the wrong thing to fear. Thousands of Tamil-medium-background cadets have passed through Amaravathinagar since 1962. What separates the ones who thrive is not their English on day one — it is whether the family treated the six months before admission as preparation time instead of waiting time.

How many Sainik Schools are in Tamil Nadu?
Tamil Nadu has one established Sainik School — Sainik School Amaravathinagar in Tiruppur district (established 1962) — and one New Sainik School, Srri SPK Public Senior Secondary School at Namakkal, added to the AISSEE list in October 2025. Both admit through the NTA’s AISSEE exam.
Can I write the AISSEE exam in Tamil?
Yes, for Class 6. The NTA offers the Class 6 AISSEE paper in 13 languages including Tamil — you choose the medium in the application form, and the booklet is printed in Tamil alongside English. For Class 9, the paper is English only.
Is Sainik School Amaravathinagar an English medium school?
Yes. It is a CBSE-affiliated, fully residential English-medium school. Even if your child writes the AISSEE Class 6 paper in Tamil, all classroom teaching, exams and daily life at the school are in English, so plan for an English transition.
Do Tamil Nadu students get a home-state quota?
Under the standing AISSEE policy, 67% of seats at each of the 33 established schools are reserved for home-state candidates, which gives Tamil Nadu-domicile students an edge at Amaravathinagar. Treat this as EXPECTED for 2027 until the NTA information bulletin confirms it.
Can girls apply to Sainik Schools in Tamil Nadu?
Yes. Girls can take AISSEE 2027 for Class 6 at both Tamil Nadu schools. About 10% of Class 6 seats, or 10 seats per school, whichever is more, are reserved for girls under the standing policy.
What is the age limit for AISSEE 2027 Class 6?
The age criteria will be confirmed in the NTA information bulletin, which is not yet released. Based on the standing pattern, children should be 10 to 12 years old as on 31 March 2027, which means born between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2017. Treat this as projected until the bulletin confirms it.
