Bihar sends its sons to every regiment of the Indian Army. The Bihar Regiment’s battle cry echoes from Kargil to Kashmir. But here is the uncomfortable truth nobody in Patna likes saying out loud: Bihar produces far more jawans than officers. The Sainik School system exists to fix exactly that imbalance — and Bihar has two of them.
If your child is in Class 5 or Class 8 in Bihar right now, this guide is the complete picture: the two schools, the admission route, and — the part most guides skip — what the competition actually looks like for a Bihar-domicile applicant.
Bihar’s Sainik School network is simple: two schools, both founded in 2003, one serving the south of the state and one the north.
| Sainik School Nalanda | Sainik School Gopalganj | |
|---|---|---|
| Established | 2003 — Bihar’s first Sainik School | 12 October 2003, Sipaya village |
| Location | Nalanda district (near Bihar Sharif; closest railheads Rajgir/Bihar Sharif) | Gopalganj district, Saran division (nearest railhead Gopalganj; Chhapra ~60 km) |
| Region served | Southern Bihar | Northern Bihar |
| Classes | VI to XII, residential, CBSE, English medium | VI to XII, residential, CBSE, English medium |
| Girls (Class 6) | Admitted under the 10% quota | Admitted under the 10% quota |
A note on the “which is better” question, because every Bihar parent asks it: there is no published ranking between the two, and anyone selling you one is guessing. Both are established Sainik Schools Society institutions with the same curriculum, the same NDA-oriented training structure, and the same admission exam. Full profiles: Sainik School Nalanda and Sainik School Gopalganj.
Both schools admit only through the AISSEE (All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination), conducted by the NTA — there is no separate Bihar entrance, no management quota, no donation route. Anyone telling you otherwise is running a scam. The exam is expected on 31 January 2027 (🔶 EXPECTED, per the NTA exam calendar; the bulletin will confirm).
Here is the quota math that decides your child’s real competition:
Now the honest part. Bihar is one of the highest-applicant states for AISSEE in the country — the aspiration is enormous and every district has coaching centres feeding the exam. That cuts two ways:
The good news: the 67% home-state quota is your shield. Your child is not competing with the whole country for those seats — only with other Bihar-domicile candidates. A Bihar applicant’s realistic target is the Bihar home-state closing marks for Nalanda or Gopalganj, not the all-India number.
The hard news: because the applicant pool is so large, Bihar’s home-state closing marks run high. Don’t plan for the qualifying marks (historically 25% per subject and 40% aggregate — 🔶 EXPECTED for 2027). Plan to score far above them. In high-demand states, the last admitted candidate typically scores well into the 200s out of 300 for Class 6. Treat the qualifying marks as the floor of the building, not the door.
The strategic part: in AISSAC e-counselling, you list school preferences. Since both Bihar schools carry the same 67% home quota for your child, list them by genuine preference — distance from home matters more than you think over six years of term breaks, and a campus visit (both schools are reachable by rail from Patna) tells you more than any ranking. Also list a sensible third option outside Bihar; the other-state quota at a less oversubscribed school is a legitimate backup, not a compromise.
Bihar-domicile applicants get tripped up by one paper more than any other: the domicile certificate. The 67% quota runs on it. Get these ready before the NTA window opens (🔶 EXPECTED Oct–Nov 2026):
Our AISSEE registration walkthrough covers the form-filling itself step by step, and the EWS quota explainer is worth reading if your family holds an EWS certificate — the interaction between EWS and the home-state quota confuses many parents.
I won’t quote a fee figure here, because the honest answer is that fees vary by school and year, and anyone quoting “the” Sainik School fee without naming the school and session is guessing. What is real: Sainik Schools charge a fraction of what private boarding schools cost, and there are two scholarship streams — Ministry of Defence scholarships and Bihar state government scholarships — that can substantially reduce the burden for eligible families. Our scholarship timeline guide maps exactly when and how to apply after admission. Check the school websites for the current fee schedule; apply for every scholarship you’re eligible for; do it in the first month.
| Window | What happens | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Oct–Nov 2026 | AISSEE 2027 notification + registration (NTA portal) | 🔶 EXPECTED |
| Nov 2026 | Correction window | 🔶 EXPECTED |
| Jan 2027 | Admit card | 🔶 EXPECTED |
| 31 Jan 2027 | AISSEE 2027 written exam (OMR) | 🔶 EXPECTED (NTA calendar) |
| Feb–Mar 2027 | Result, AISSAC e-counselling, medicals | 🔶 EXPECTED |
Between now and the notification, the highest-value work is unglamorous: get the domicile certificate in hand, confirm the caste certificate is in Central format, and keep the child solving one full paper a week. When the window opens, you’ll file in a day instead of scrambling for a month.
How many Sainik Schools are there in Bihar? Bihar has two established Sainik Schools: Sainik School Nalanda and Sainik School Gopalganj, both established in 2003. Both admit through the AISSEE conducted by NTA.
What is the home-state quota for Bihar in Sainik Schools? 67% of seats in each Sainik School are reserved for candidates domiciled in the school’s home state, so Bihar-domicile applicants compete for 67% of the seats at both Nalanda and Gopalganj. The remaining 33% go to other-state candidates.
Can girls apply to Sainik Schools in Bihar? Yes. Girls can apply for Class 6 at both Nalanda and Gopalganj, with at least 10% of Class 6 seats (or 10 seats, whichever is higher) reserved for girls in each school. Class 9 admission for girls depends on vacancies at the individual school.
Which Bihar Sainik School should I list first in counselling? For Bihar-domicile applicants the quota math is identical at both schools, so list them by genuine preference: consider distance from home, campus visits, and word-of-mouth from current cadets’ families rather than any rumoured ranking.
What are the age limits for AISSEE 2027 for Bihar applicants? Expected: Class 6 applicants must be 10 to 12 years old as on 31 March 2027 (born 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2017); Class 9 applicants 13 to 15 years (born 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2014). Final limits will be confirmed in the NTA information bulletin.
Is the AISSEE 2027 notification out yet? No. As of 22 October 2026, NTA has not released the AISSEE 2027 information bulletin. The exam is expected on 31 January 2027 per the NTA exam calendar. Keep documents ready and watch the official NTA AISSEE portal.
