Sainik School Nalanda — Where India’s Oldest University Meets Its Newest Officers

Nalanda is where India’s intellectual tradition began. The ancient Nalanda University — founded in the 5th century CE, destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1193 — was the world’s first residential university, attracting scholars from China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. Today, a modern Nalanda University has been re-established nearby, and Sainik School Nalanda, established in 2003, carries forward the district’s educational legacy in a different direction: preparing officers for the Indian Armed Forces.

Sainik School Nalanda is Bihar’s first Sainik School, established before Sainik School Gopalganj (also 2003). The school was created to serve Bihar’s youth — a state with one of the strongest military recruitment traditions in India through the Bihar Regiment, but with limited access to military-oriented education.

History & Legacy

From Ancient Scholars to Modern Soldiers

The Nalanda district’s identity is defined by the ancient university. But Bihar’s modern identity is defined, in part, by the Bihar Regiment — one of the Indian Army’s most decorated infantry regiments. Sainik School Nalanda bridges these two identities: it is located in the land of scholars, producing soldiers.

The school was established in 2003 as part of the Government of India’s expansion of Sainik Schools into states with strong military recruitment traditions. Bihar, which has produced soldiers for every major Indian conflict, needed a formal military feeder institution.

Bihar’s Sainik School Network

Bihar has two Sainik Schools:

  1. Nalanda (est. 2003) — serves southern Bihar
  2. Gopalganj (est. 2003) — serves northern Bihar

This distribution ensures coverage across the state’s diverse regions.
