Last verified: 7 October 2026. All figures below are ✅ CONFIRMED from named official or parliamentary sources as reported by established media: the CAG’s audit via The Week (December 2025), Rajya Sabha data and the Defence Minister’s statement via SabrangIndia, and the Lucknow NDA-written result via Hindustan Times (May 2026). Where a figure is dated or approximate, we say so. Nothing here is estimated by us.

Ask any parent why they want their child in a Sainik School and most will say some version of the same thing: “He’ll go to the NDA.” The school’s own mission statement, carried on NTA’s official portal, says Sainik Schools prepare cadets to join the National Defence Academy and the Indian Naval Academy. So the assumption feels safe.
It isn’t. The honest answer to the question in every parent’s head — do most Sainik School students join the NDA? — is no. Not even close. And knowing the real numbers will make you a better decision-maker than believing the brochure version.
The Comptroller and Auditor General — India’s national auditor, whose reports are tabled in Parliament — examined exactly this question. Its findings, reported by The Week in December 2025, are sobering:
| Period | NDA intake from Sainik Schools | Official target |
|---|---|---|
| 2019–20 | ~13.40% of Class XII strength | 20% |
| 2020–21 | ~10.57% of Class XII strength | 20% |
| 2021–22 | 120 cadets (vs target of 250) | 250 cadets |
| Three years combined | ~9.70% success rate | 20% per year |
Read that again: roughly one cadet in ten from a Sainik School’s Class XII batch makes it to the NDA — against an official target of one in five that the schools have consistently missed. The CAG’s own verdict was blunt: performance on NDA intake was “below the targets envisaged despite considerable number of candidates appearing.”
Separate data shared in the Rajya Sabha tells the same story from a different angle: over 11 percent of Sainik School cadets joined the armed forces over the last six years. And when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh credits Sainik Schools with producing more than 7,000 officers, remember that figure is cumulative since 1961 — sixty-plus years of batches, not one.
For historical perspective, a 2013–14 parliamentary Standing Committee report had noted that nearly 20% of Sainik School students appearing for the NDA exam made the cut back then. The direction of travel since is downward, not upward.
If the numbers are this modest, why does every parent believe otherwise? Three reasons.
First, the successes are loud. When 22 cadets from UP Sainik School, Lucknow cleared the NDA written examination in May 2026 — a strike rate of nearly 50%, placing the school among the top three Sainik Schools in the country — it made headlines (Hindustan Times, 12 May 2026). Nobody writes headlines about the other half of the batch.
Second, the school genuinely is built for it. Morning PT, drill, house systems, leadership roles — a Sainik School cadet walks into an SSB interview with a bearing that civilian-school candidates take months to build. Selection boards notice. The CAG data measures final intake, which is brutally competitive for everyone; it doesn’t capture how many cadets reach the SSB stage, where Sainik School alumni are widely regarded as strong.
Third, survivorship bias in every family gathering. “Sharma ji’s son is at NDA” travels fast. “Sharma ji’s other son is doing B.Tech in Pune” doesn’t — even though the second outcome is statistically the more common one.
This is the part nobody talks about, and it matters more than the NDA statistics. The majority of Sainik School alumni build excellent careers that have nothing to do with a uniform:
None of this is failure. A school that produces doctors, engineers, civil servants and officers is doing its job — the job was never “NDA or nothing.”
Honesty requires both sides of the ledger:
| What the school gives | What it can’t give |
|---|---|
| Physical fitness as a daily habit | The NDA written score — that’s on the child |
| SSB-friendly personality: confidence, teamwork, communication | One of only ~3–4 NDA attempts (age window 16.5–19.5) |
| A peer group that normalises ambition | A guarantee — 9 in 10 cadets don’t make it |
| Structure that protects study hours | Motivation — the uniform has to be the child’s dream, not yours |
That last row is the one I say carefully to parents in counselling sessions. A child pushed toward NDA by family pressure, without the personal fire for it, rarely survives the SSB — assessors are trained to spot exactly that.
Send your child to a Sainik School for what it reliably delivers: discipline, character, strong academics, and a genuine head start toward the NDA. Don’t send them for a guarantee that doesn’t exist. The families who thrive are the ones who walk in knowing the real numbers — and who would be proud of the outcome even if the uniform never comes.
Do most Sainik School students join the NDA? No. CAG data reported in Parliament coverage shows NDA intake from Sainik Schools was about 10 to 13 percent of Class XII strength in 2019–21, against an official target of 20 percent. Roughly one cadet in ten makes it.
What percentage of Sainik School cadets join the armed forces? Data shared in the Rajya Sabha puts it at over 11 percent of cadets over the last six years. The Defence Minister has separately credited Sainik Schools with producing more than 7,000 officers in total since 1961.
Which Sainik School sends the most cadets to NDA? Schools vary year to year, but UP Sainik School Lucknow is consistently near the top — 22 of its cadets cleared the NDA written exam in May 2026, a strike rate of nearly 50 percent, placing it among the top three Sainik Schools that cycle. (Note the fine print on UP’s own exam if you’re considering it: the NDA-bond details here.)
Is NDA the only good outcome of a Sainik School education? Not at all. Alumni go on to IITs, medical colleges, the civil services, corporate careers and other defence entries like CDS and AFCAT. The discipline and CBSE grounding help everywhere, not just at the SSB. The alumni network is one of the school’s most underrated assets.
Does studying in a Sainik School guarantee NDA selection? Nothing guarantees it. The school gives structure, fitness and personality development, but the NDA written exam and SSB are cleared by the individual cadet. Even inside Sainik Schools, only a minority make the final merit list.
When should a Sainik School student start NDA preparation? Class 11 is the practical starting point. The NDA age window of 16.5 to 19.5 years gives most aspirants only three to four attempts, so beginning NDA-pattern mathematics in Class 11 keeps every attempt usable.
