Age limits, eligibility and patterns below are ✅ CONFIRMED from the UPSC’s 2026 NDA/CDS notifications as reported by the Indian Express education desk and Sakshi Education, cross-checked against a detailed 2026 comparison. A father called last month. His Class 12 son is decent in maths, and the family treats “NDA” as the only door into the forces. “If NDA doesn’t happen,” he asked, “is CDS the backup?”
CDS isn’t a backup for NDA — it’s a different door, in a different building, that opens years later. Here’s the thing most parents miss: these are not three difficulty levels of one exam. They are three routes for three life stages. Picking the wrong one to “prepare for” wastes the one thing you can’t get back — eligible years.
If your child is in school, NDA is the only one of the three on the table. The other two are for the graduate your child will become.
UPSC, twice a year — the only officer entry straight out of school.
Eligibility: passed or appearing in Class 12. Army wing: any stream. Air Force and Naval wings: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory. Age 16.5–19.5, unmarried. Girls eligible since 2021 — same paper, same criteria.
The exam: written 900 marks (Mathematics 300 + General Ability 600), then SSB worth 900. Total 1800. Wrong answers cost one-third; blanks cost nothing. The maths is Class 11–12 level, but there’s a lot of it — speed decides.
Training: three years at NDA Khadakwasla (Pune), then one year at the service academy — IMA Dehradun (Army), INA Ezhimala (Navy), AFA Hyderabad (Air Force). You graduate with a degree and a permanent commission.
The honest catch: most students get 3–4 attempts, total. Miss the window and NDA is gone forever — which is why the CDS conversation matters.
UPSC, twice a year — strictly for graduates (final-year students may apply).
Eligibility: a bachelor’s degree. IMA (Army): any degree. INA (Navy): engineering. AFA: Physics and Maths at 10+2 or engineering. OTA: any degree, men and women.
Age (2026 notifications): IMA and INA 19–24; AFA 20–24; OTA 19–25. The notification’s birth-date table is the final word each cycle.
The exam: English, GK, Maths (100 each) for IMA/INA/AFA; OTA skips maths — English and GK only. Same one-third negative marking.
Training and commission — read this part twice:
| Entry | Training | Commission |
|---|---|---|
| IMA, Dehradun | ~18 months | Permanent |
| INA, Ezhimala | ~1 year | Permanent |
| AFA, Hyderabad | ~1 year | Permanent |
| OTA, Chennai | ~11 months | Short Service |
The most common misunderstanding we hear: “CDS means permanent commission.” Only three of its four doors do. OTA is Short Service — a fine career, but a different contract. Know which one you’re signing up for before the SSB, not after.
The Indian Air Force’s own entry, twice a year — for graduates who specifically want the blue uniform.
Eligibility: bachelor’s degree with at least 60% marks. Flying branch and technical entries need 50% in Maths and Physics at 10+2; technical branches need an engineering degree. Ground duty covers administration, logistics, accounts and education.
Age: flying 20–24 (up to 26 for CPL holders); ground duty 20–26. Unmarried men and women.
Training: about one year at AFA Dundigal, Hyderabad. Commission: Short Service (14 years for flying). The written test is the least maths-intensive of the three — but every candidate still faces the same SSB.

Child in Class 10:
Child in Class 12:
Graduate (or final year):
1. Treating CDS as “NDA’s backup.” It’s a graduate exam with its own syllabus and SSB — not a second chance at the same thing.
2. Ignoring the commission type. Families celebrate an OTA recommendation without realising it’s Short Service. Read the entry, not just the result.
3. Preparing for the written and forgetting the SSB. All three routes end at the Services Selection Board — five days of psychology tests, group tasks and interviews. The written paper gets you to the SSB; the SSB gets you the uniform. A school routine that builds stamina, communication and leadership is preparing for the harder half.
That’s the Sainik School connection, by the way. These schools exist for exactly this pipeline — drill, academics, house responsibilities map directly onto what the SSB selects for. If your child is preparing for AISSEE 2027 now, this article is the five-year map: Class 6 in 2027 means Class 12 around 2034, and NDA attempts after that. The families who plan the whole arc don’t panic at 19.
Can my daughter apply for NDA? Yes. NDA has admitted female candidates since 2021, with the same criteria — 12th pass, age 16.5 to 19.5, unmarried.
Is there age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC in NDA, CDS or AFCAT? No. These defence entries give no age relaxation by category — the notification’s age window applies equally to everyone.
Can a commerce or arts student apply for NDA? Yes, but only for the Army wing. The Air Force and Naval wings require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12.
Does CDS give a permanent commission? It depends on the academy. IMA, INA and AFA entries lead to permanent commission; the OTA entry is Short Service Commission.
Which is easier — NDA, CDS or AFCAT? Honestly, the wrong question. Every route ends at the same SSB interview, which is the real filter. Pick by eligibility and career goal, not perceived easiness.
When should a Sainik School student start thinking about NDA? Class 11. The 16.5–19.5 window gives most students only 3–4 attempts, so starting NDA-pattern maths in Class 11 keeps every attempt usable.
