Missed Class 6? Your child still has a genuine second door — Sainik School Class 9 admission 2027, through the same AISSEE exam, on the same date, 31 January 2027. That’s the short answer to the question I hear most often, and it’s worth saying plainly: the door is real. But it’s a narrower door than Class 6, and the exam paper is entirely in English. If you plan for those two facts from day one, Class 9 entry is absolutely winnable.
A father from Lucknow called me last month. His son had missed Class 6 by eight marks in 2025. “He’s in Class 8 now,” the father said. “Have we missed the bus?” No. But — and I told him this directly — the Class 9 bus has fewer seats, and it runs in English. He nodded, and they started preparing the very next week. That attitude is what this guide is about.

Two things trip parents up here. First, the age: it’s projected, not announced, because the 2027 bulletin isn’t out. If your child’s birth date sits right at the edge of that window, keep watching — and read our detailed age-limit guide before you assume anything. Second, the medium: the entire paper is in English. Not bilingual. English only. I’ll keep repeating this because it’s the single biggest shock for Hindi-medium families.

✅ CONFIRMED pattern (AISSEE 2026; 2027 repeat 🔶 expected). Offline OMR, all MCQs, no negative marking. Qualifying bar: 25% in each section and 40% aggregate (the 40% rule doesn’t apply to SC/ST candidates).
Now, the part that actually matters. In Class 9, each Maths question carries 4 marks — in Class 6 it’s 3. Maths is 200 out of 400. Half the paper. A silly calculation error doesn’t cost you a mark here; it costs you four. I say this not to scare you but to set priorities: if your child masters Class 8 Maths and keeps English decent, half the battle is fought in one subject.
Let’s not sugarcoat it. Class 9 seats are genuinely limited. The 33 established schools admit far fewer Class 9 students than Class 6 — in some schools it’s a handful of seats. In the 2026 cycle, 19 of the newer PPP-model schools also admitted Class 9 students, which helps. The final 2027 list of participating schools will come with the bulletin (🔶 expected October 2026). Girls are eligible for Class 9, but girls’ seats vary from school to school — check the bulletin, don’t assume.

You have roughly four months until 31 January 2027. Here’s how I’d split it:
Maths (200 marks — the decider). NCERT Class 8, cover to cover, then R.S. Aggarwal for volume. Algebra, geometry, mensuration — all three need to be automatic. Thirty questions a day, every day. No exceptions.
English (50 marks). NCERT Class 8 (Honeydew and It So Happened) plus Wren & Martin for grammar basics. One comprehension passage daily. The paper is long, so reading speed matters as much as grammar.
General Science (50 marks). NCERT Class 8 — numericals in physics chapters, key reactions in chemistry, labelled diagrams in biology. Examiners love diagrams.
Social Studies (50 marks). NCERT Class 8 History, Geography and Civics, plus basic map work. Don’t neglect this — it’s the easiest 50 marks if you’ve read the textbook twice.
Intelligence (50 marks). R.S. Aggarwal’s reasoning section, twenty questions a day. This is the most scoring section on the paper.

Category certificates cause more last-minute panic than anything else. If yours is more than a year old, get it renewed now.
Q1. Is Class 9 admission harder than Class 6? Honestly? Yes, in one sense — fewer seats means stiffer competition. But the syllabus is just NCERT Class 8, which your child is studying anyway. A well-prepared student has a very real shot.
Q2. My child studies in Hindi medium. Can they still attempt it? They can — but the paper is in English only. Start the switch now: English textbooks, English practice papers, even English newspaper reading. Four months is enough to build the habit if you start today.
Q3. Can girls apply for Class 9? Yes, girls are eligible. The number of girls’ seats differs by school, so check the bulletin when it’s released.
Q4. After Class 9 entry, is there still time for NDA preparation? Four years — Classes 9 through 12 — is comfortably enough. The NDA roadmap shows how students use those years.
