Sainik School Sambalpur — Western Odisha’s New Military Academy

Sambalpur is the cultural capital of western Odisha — a region defined by the Mahanadi River, the Hirakud Dam, and the Sambalpuri textile tradition. It is also a region with a significant tribal population and limited educational infrastructure compared to coastal Odisha. Sainik School Sambalpur, established as Odisha’s second Sainik School (after Bhubaneswar), was created to serve western Odisha’s youth, offering them a path to the National Defence Academy that was previously inaccessible.

The school’s establishment was part of the Odisha government’s initiative to expand military education beyond the state capital. The Odisha Cabinet, headed by CM Naveen Patnaik, sanctioned the lease of government land for the school, recognizing the need for a Sainik School in the state’s western region.

History & Legacy

Western Odisha’s Educational Gap

Western Odisha — comprising districts like Sambalpur, Bolangir, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Bargarh — has historically lagged behind coastal Odisha in educational infrastructure. The region’s tribal communities (Gond, Kondh, Munda) have a tradition of military service through the Odisha Regiment and other units, but lacked access to military-oriented education.

Sainik School Sambalpur was established to fill this gap. The school was positioned in Sambalpur — the largest city in western Odisha — to maximize accessibility for the region’s youth.

Odisha’s Second Sainik School

Odisha now has two Sainik Schools:

  1. Bhubaneswar (est. 1961) — serves coastal and southern Odisha
  2. Sambalpur (est. 2022) — serves western Odisha

This distribution ensures coverage across the state’s diverse regions.
