Sainik School Rewari — Ahirwal’s Gateway to the Officer Corps

Rewari district in southern Haryana is the heart of Ahirwal — the land of the Ahir (Yadav) community. The Ahirs have a martial tradition that is deeply embedded in their culture: the Bhagavad Gita’s warrior-sage Arjuna is claimed as an ancestor, and the community has served in the Indian Army through the Kumaon Regiment, the Rajputana Rifles, and other units. Ahirwal’s contribution to military service is disproportionate to its population — a fact that makes Sainik School Rewari, established in 2008, a natural fit.

Sainik School Rewari is Haryana’s second Sainik School — the first being Sainik School Kunjpura (est. 1961). The school was established to serve southern Haryana, which has a strong military recruitment tradition but previously had to send its youth to Kunjpura in Karnal for military-oriented education.

History & Legacy

The Ahirwal Military Tradition

Ahirwal — comprising Rewari, Mahendragarh, and parts of Gurgaon district — is one of India’s most concentrated military recruitment zones. The Ahir (Yadav) community’s martial culture is rooted in their claim of descent from Lord Krishna’s Yadava clan and the Pandavas. Military service is not just a career choice in Ahirwal — it is a cultural expectation.

Sainik School Rewari was established in 2008 to serve this community. The school provides structured NDA preparation that was previously unavailable in southern Haryana — youth had to travel to Kunjpura (150+ km away) for military-oriented education.

Haryana’s Sainik School Network

Haryana now has two Sainik Schools:

  1. Kunjpura (est. 1961) — serves northern Haryana
  2. Rewari (est. 2008) — serves southern Haryana

This distribution ensures coverage across the state.
