Sainik School Kodagu — Where Coffee Country Meets Military Discipline

Kodagu (Coorg) is Karnataka’s highland jewel — a district of rolling hills, coffee plantations, and mist-covered forests that produce some of India’s finest arabica beans. But Kodagu has another, less-celebrated tradition: military service. The Kodava community — the indigenous people of Coorg — have served in the Indian Army in disproportionate numbers for their population size, producing generals, colonels, and decorated soldiers.

Sainik School Kodagu, established in 2007, was created to formalize this tradition. Located in the coffee-growing highlands of Kodagu district, the school is Karnataka’s second Sainik School — the first being Sainik School Bijapur (est. 1963). The school serves the youth of Karnataka’s hill districts and the broader Kodava community, offering them a structured path to the NDA.

History & Legacy

The Kodava Military Tradition

The Kodava community’s military tradition is legendary. Despite numbering only about 1.5 lakh (150,000), Kodavas have produced a disproportionately high number of military officers. The community’s martial culture — rooted in their unique customs, the Kodava language, and their tradition of carrying firearms (Kodavas are exempt from the Arms Act) — makes military service a natural career choice.

Sainik School Kodagu was established to channel this tradition into the officer corps. The school provides structured NDA preparation that was previously unavailable in the hill districts of Karnataka.

Coffee Country Campus

The school’s location in Kodagu district gives it a unique character. The campus sits in the Western Ghats, surrounded by coffee plantations and forests. The climate — cool, misty, and pleasant — is ideal for physical training and outdoor activities.
