Sainik School Jhansi — From Rani Lakshmibai’s Fort to the NDA Pipeline

Jhansi is synonymous with one name: Rani Lakshmibai. The warrior queen who led the 1857 Rebellion against the British East India Company, fighting to the death at the age of 29, made Jhansi a symbol of Indian resistance. It is entirely fitting, then, that Sainik School Jhansi — established in 2019 — was placed in this city of defiance.

Located in Shankargarh village, Bhagwantpura, the school operates under CBSE affiliation number 2120151 (Period of Affiliation: 01 April 2022 to 31 March 2027). The school’s motto — “Education - Knowledge - Power” — reflects the Sainik School philosophy of empowering youth through structured education.

The school’s Khetrapal Mini Auditorium is named after Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, PVC, the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra — India’s highest military decoration. Khetarpal, a 1971 war hero, was just 21 when he destroyed enemy tanks in the Battle of Basantar before being killed in action. The auditorium’s name is a daily inspiration to cadets.

History & Legacy

Bundelkhand’s Military School

Bundelkhand — the region spanning southern Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh — has a martial tradition rooted in the Bundela Rajput warrior clans. The region produced Rani Lakshmibai, Tatya Tope, and numerous freedom fighters. Military service remains a significant career path for Bundelkhand’s youth.

Sainik School Jhansi was established in 2019 to serve this region. Bundelkhand, despite its military heritage, lacked a Sainik School — the nearest were in Lucknow and Mainpuri, both in central UP. The school fills a geographic gap in the Sainik Schools network.

The Khetrapal Mini Auditorium

The school’s auditorium is named after 2/Lt Arun Khetarpal, PVC (1950-1971), who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his heroism in the Battle of Basantar during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. At 21, he was the youngest PVC recipient. The naming is a deliberate choice to inspire cadets with a real example of courage and sacrifice.

The Virangana

The school’s magazine is called The Virangana — a reference to Rani Lakshmibai, the warrior queen of Jhansi. The magazine documents school activities, academic achievements, and cadet life.
