Sainik School Chhingchhip — Where Girls Made History Before the Nation Caught Up

On 4th June 2018, six girls walked through the gates of Sainik School Chhingchhip in Mizoram and made national headlines. “History was created on June 4 when six girls joined the Sainik School Chhingchhip in Mizoram,” reported the Times of India. This was three years before the Government of India officially directed all Sainik Schools to admit girls in 2021. Mizoram’s Sainik School was already there.

Sainik School Chhingchhip, established on 21st January 2018, is the youngest Sainik School in the Northeast. Located in Chhingchhip village in the Serchhip district of Mizoram, the school serves the Mizo community — a predominantly Christian, tribal society with a strong tradition of discipline and community service. The school’s campus has been “suitably developed to provide a congenial environment for training the Cadets.”

History & Legacy

Mizoram’s Military Identity

Mizoram is one of India’s most peaceful states — a remarkable transformation from the insurgency-ridden 1960s-80s. The Mizo community’s transition from rebellion to peace was facilitated by the 1986 Mizo Peace Accord, and the state’s military identity has evolved from conflict to service. The Assam Rifles, in particular, has deep ties to Mizoram, and many Mizo youth serve in the armed forces.

Sainik School Chhingchhip was established in 2018 to formalize this military pathway. The school provides structured preparation for the NDA, something that was previously unavailable in Mizoram.

The Girl Cadet Pioneer

The school’s decision to admit girls in 2018 — three years before the national directive — was groundbreaking. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati visited the school in September 2022, inspecting the guard of honour and meeting staff. The school’s early adoption of co-education reflected Mizoram’s progressive gender norms.

The Serchhip District

Chhingchhip is in Serchhip district, one of Mizoram’s smaller districts. The school’s rural location provides a focused residential environment, away from the distractions of Aizawl (the state capital, approximately 120 km away).
