Sainik School Balachadi — Gujarat’s Coastal Military School with a WWII Secret

The golden sands of the Gulf of Kutch stretch behind the campus. The salt-laden wind from the Arabian Sea is a constant companion. And somewhere in the school’s history lies a story that most visitors don’t know: during World War II, this very site was a camp for Polish children — refugees from the Soviet deportations who found sanctuary in India through the extraordinary compassion of Jam Sahib Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji of Nawanagar.

Sainik School Balachadi, established in 1961 in Jamnagar, Gujarat, occupies a campus with a layered history. The school was one of the early Sainik Schools, built to serve Gujarat’s youth. But the land it stands on was once the Balachadi camp where, during WWII, Polish orphan children were sheltered by the Maharaja of Nawanagar — an act of humanitarianism that Poland honors to this day, with a school in Warsaw named after the Jamsaheb.

The sprawling campus along the Gulf of Kutch provides a unique coastal setting for military training — the beach, the salt flats, and the maritime climate all contribute to a training environment that is distinctly different from the hill-station or plains Sainik Schools.

History & Legacy

The Polish Connection

During WWII, the Soviet Union deported hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens to Siberian labour camps. When the deportees were released after Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, thousands of Polish orphans — starving, diseased, and homeless — needed refuge. Jam Sahib Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji of Nawanagar (Jamnagar) offered to shelter them.

The Balachadi camp was established near Jamnagar, and hundreds of Polish children were brought there. They received food, education, medical care, and — crucially — a sense of home. The camp operated until the end of the war, after which the children were resettled. Poland has never forgotten this act of kindness: the Jamsaheb Digvijay Singh Jadeja School in Warsaw was established to honor the Maharaja’s legacy.

When Sainik School Balachadi was established in 1961, it inherited this site — and this legacy of compassion and international friendship.

Gujarat’s Military School

Gujarat’s contribution to the Indian Armed Forces has historically been through the merchant navy and technical services rather than combat roles. Sainik School Balachadi was established to change this dynamic, offering Gujarat’s youth a structured path to the National Defence Academy.

The school has produced officers for all three services, with a particular strength in naval careers given its coastal location.

The Saraswati Temple

The school celebrates Basant Panchami with devotion at its Saraswati Temple on campus — a tradition that connects the military school to India’s spiritual heritage.
