Last verified: 16 October 2026. The Punjab and Rajasthan slab figures below are CONFIRMED — each reported by two independent news outlets. Maharashtra figures are CONFIRMED per a 2025 report. All state schemes change periodically: verify the current year’s notification with your school office before relying on these numbers. Nothing here is a promise from us — it is what the official schemes say today.

Most parents ask me one question about Sainik School money: “How much is the fee?” The smarter question is: “How much will I actually pay?” Because the honest answer to the first is a big number, while the honest answer to the second — for a large share of cadets — is far less. The money comes from state government scholarships and the Ministry of Defence, not from the school’s generosity, and every state runs its own scheme. That means the real number depends on your domicile state and your family income.
Our full scholarship guide explains the framework. This article does something different: it gives you the actual income slabs currently in force, the step-by-step application process, and the one document you must have ready before anything else.
The Punjab government revised these slabs in September 2023, confirmed by both The Tribune and the Punjab government’s own announcement:
| Annual family income | Tuition fee scholarship |
|---|---|
| Up to Rs 3,00,000 | 100% |
| Rs 3,00,001 – Rs 5,00,000 | 75% |
| Rs 5,00,001 – Rs 7,50,000 | 50% |
| Rs 7,50,001 – Rs 10,00,000 | 25% |
| Above Rs 10,00,000 | None |
(Two reports differ slightly on the middle-band boundaries — 5–7 lakh vs 5–7.5 lakh — so confirm the exact band at the school office.)
Reported by Hindustan Times after the state government raised both the income ceiling and the amounts:
| Annual family income | Tuition fee scholarship |
|---|---|
| Up to Rs 3,00,000 | Full — Rs 37,500 |
| Rs 3,00,000 – Rs 5,00,000 | 3/4th — Rs 30,000 |
| Rs 5,00,000 – Rs 7,50,000 | Half — Rs 20,000 |
| Rs 7,50,000 – Rs 10,00,000 | One-fourth — Rs 15,000 |
Per a 2025 report on the state’s Social Justice Department scheme: SC students studying in Maharashtra’s Sainik Schools get a maintenance allowance if family income is Rs 2,50,000 or less per year, with Maharashtra domicile, minimum 60% attendance, and passing the class. The allowance covers lodging, boarding, uniform, clothing, pocket money and tuition for students in the government Sainik Schools at Satara, Nashik and Pune.
The Ministry of Defence runs separate scholarships for children of defence personnel, based on the parent’s rank, plus central assistance and NDA incentive components. If either parent serves or has served, ask the school office and your Zila Sainik Welfare Office — these stack beside state schemes in the sense that you compare them, not take both.
This is where parents go wrong. There is no central fee-concession form and no AISSEE-form checkbox that grants it. The process runs after admission, through the school. Here is the real sequence:
Can a General-category child get a fee concession in Sainik School?
Yes. Income-based state schemes do not depend on caste — several states waive 25 to 100 percent of the tuition fee purely on the basis of family income, for domicile cadets. Defence families have separate Ministry of Defence scholarships.
Do you apply for the fee concession before or after admission?
After admission. The scholarship application goes through the school’s administrative office once your child has joined, with an income certificate issued by the revenue authority. Budget for the first year’s fee independently — the first disbursement can take time.
What is the income limit for a full fee concession?
It varies by state. In Punjab, family income up to Rs 3 lakh per year gets a 100 percent tuition fee waiver for Punjab-domicile cadets; Rajasthan’s scheme also gives full scholarship up to Rs 3 lakh family income. Other states have their own ceilings.
Which document proves family income for the concession?
An income certificate issued by the tehsildar or your state’s citizen-services portal, usually in the earning parent’s name and valid for the financial year. Apply for it well before counselling — issuance typically takes 10 to 30 days.
Can we take two scholarships at the same time?
Generally no. You pick the single most beneficial scheme available to you — the state income-based scheme, a defence-linked grant, or another option. Compare them and choose one.
Do the New Sainik Schools (PPP mode) offer the same concessions?
That is not confirmed. State scholarship schemes currently apply in the established Sainik Schools; the position of the new PPP-mode schools will be clarified in official notifications. Check your school’s prospectus.
