Last verified: 11 October 2026. The NCERT position below is CONFIRMED from two independent national education reports. The NTA/NEET precedent is CONFIRMED from a national news report. Whether AISSEE 2027 will mention APAAR is EXPECTED — the bulletin isn’t out yet, so treat that section as a forecast, not a rule.

If your child’s school sent home a consent form for something called an “APAAR ID” this year, you’re not alone — and you’re right to ask what it actually is before signing. Many schools presented it as urgent, some parents heard it was “mandatory,” and a few even worried the AISSEE form would reject their child without one. Let’s sort fact from pressure, with sources you can check.
APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It is a unique, lifelong digital identity for every student — the government’s “One Nation, One Student ID” programme, built under the National Education Policy 2020 and the Academic Bank of Credits framework.
In plain terms: it’s a single digital account that follows your child from school to school and board to board, storing marksheets, certificates, transfer records and co-curricular achievements in one place. It links into the DigiLocker ecosystem, so the records are digitally verifiable — no more carrying attested photocopies everywhere. The idea is to cut paperwork, stop duplicate records, and make life easier for students who migrate between states.
It’s a 12-digit ID, created through the school — not something you apply for on your own. The school collects a parental consent form, generates the ID on the government portal, and links it to the child’s DigiLocker.
This is where the rumours die. In April 2026, NCERT clarified publicly that APAAR ID is not compulsory for school admission:
“A child can still get admission without an APAAR ID. It’s not a requirement.”
The Education Ministry’s own FAQs say the same — APAAR is “not mandatory” and there is “no legal requirement mandating its use.” Schools must follow standard admission procedures regardless of whether a student has one. No child can be denied entry into a school for lacking an APAAR ID.
So if any school told you admission depends on it, that was wrong — and you now have NCERT’s own statement to quote back.
Here’s the nuance that matters for AISSEE parents. For NEET UG 2025, NTA’s official notice urged candidates to use their APAAR ID alongside Aadhaar-based authentication during the application and examination process. It was encouraged — framed as making verification smoother — not a hard gate that rejected applications.
That tells you NTA’s direction of travel: the agency likes APAAR, and future bulletins may keep nudging candidates toward it. But “urged” is not “required,” and no NTA school-level exam has made it a compulsory field so far.
The honest answer, tonight:
Almost certainly not. The AISSEE 2027 information bulletin is not out yet, but the 2026 form’s required fields were the familiar set — photograph, signature, thumb impression, birth and domicile certificates, category certificate where applicable. APAAR appeared nowhere in it. Given NCERT’s clear “not mandatory” position and NTA’s track record of encouraging rather than requiring it, there is no reason to expect the 2027 form to demand an APAAR ID.
What to do: don’t chase it for AISSEE. If your child’s school is generating APAAR IDs anyway (most are — the ministry directed states to roll it out in all schools), let them; it costs you nothing and the consent form is the only step on your side. But do not delay your AISSEE preparation or document work waiting for one.
Parents confuse these three constantly. Here’s the clean split:
| Aadhaar | APAAR ID | DigiLocker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | National identity number for all residents | Education-specific student academic account | Digital document wallet |
| Who it’s for | Everyone | Students only | Everyone |
| Issued by | UIDAI | School / Education Ministry | Government of India (MeitY) |
| Lifelong? | Yes | Yes — follows the student across schools | Yes |
| Needed for AISSEE? | Useful for identity verification | Not required (expected) | Useful for storing/fetching certificates |
| Parent action | Already have it, presumably | Sign the school’s consent form if offered | Optional — handy for document scans |
A few practical notes, because this is where parents actually get stuck:
APAAR is real, it’s growing, and having one will probably make your child’s academic paperwork smoother over the years. It is not a ticket you need to buy before the AISSEE 2027 form opens. Get your category certificates renewed (see our OBC-NCL/EWS validity guide), your photos scanned, and your domicile in order — those are the documents that actually decide whether the form submits.
Is APAAR ID mandatory for AISSEE 2027? No evidence says it will be required. NCERT clarified in April 2026 that APAAR ID is not compulsory for school admission, and the AISSEE 2027 bulletin (not yet released) has never listed it as a required field. The expected answer: no, but check the bulletin when it drops.
What is APAAR ID? APAAR — Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry — is a unique, lifelong digital identity for students under the “One Nation, One Student ID” programme. It stores academic records like marksheets and certificates in one place, linked to the DigiLocker ecosystem.
Has NTA ever asked for APAAR ID in an entrance exam? Yes, partially. For NEET UG 2025, NTA urged candidates to use their APAAR ID along with Aadhaar-based authentication during application and the exam process. It was encouraged, not a hard requirement.
How does my child get an APAAR ID? Schools generate it. The school collects parental consent, creates the ID on the government portal, and links it to the child’s DigiLocker account. You do not apply for it independently.
Can my child be denied school admission for not having an APAAR ID? No. NCERT has stated categorically that no child can be denied admission for lack of an APAAR ID. It is a facilitative tool, not a gatekeeping requirement.
Is APAAR ID the same as Aadhaar? No. Aadhaar is a general identity document for all residents. APAAR is an education-specific academic account that tracks a student’s learning journey, credits and certificates across schools and boards.
