Last verified: 9 October 2026. AISSEE 2027 dates, fees and patterns below are CONFIRMED per the official 2026 pattern as published on our site, except where marked EXPECTED (notification still awaited as of today). RMS CET 2026 details are CONFIRMED from the official NTA information bulletin as reported by the Organiser, Jagran Josh and the government-hosted RMS CET notice.

Defence-school families face an unusual December-January double-header. The RMS CET 2026 is on 13 December 2026 (Sunday), and AISSEE 2027 is tentatively set for 31 January 2027 — barely six weeks apart. Both exams admit to Class 6 and Class 9, both are conducted by NTA in OMR multiple-choice format, both test Maths, Language/English, Intelligence and General Knowledge, and both have no negative marking.
So the question is fair: are they two versions of the same exam, or genuinely different tests? They are genuinely different — and the difference decides which one your child is likelier to crack. Let’s compare them piece by piece.
| Feature | AISSEE 2027 | RMS CET 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Schools covered | 33 legacy Sainik Schools + approved New Sainik Schools across India | Only 5 Rashtriya Military Schools: Chail (HP), Ajmer, Dholpur (Rajasthan), Belgaum, Bengaluru (Karnataka) |
| Entry classes | Class 6 and Class 9 | Class 6 and Class 9 |
| Conducted by | NTA for the Sainik Schools Society (Ministry of Defence) | NTA for the Directorate of Military Schools |
| Exam date | 31 Jan 2027 — EXPECTED (per NTA exam calendar; notification awaited) | 13 Dec 2026 — CONFIRMED |
| Application status | Notification not yet released (as of 9 Oct 2026) | Window open 23 Sep – 20 Oct 2026 (late window 21–25 Oct, +₹500) |
| Fee | EXPECTED ₹850 (Gen/OBC/defence wards), ₹700 (SC/ST) — 2026 rates | CONFIRMED ₹1,000 (Gen/OBC), ₹750 (SC/ST/wards of KIA personnel) |
| Negative marking | None — either exam | None — either exam |
The single biggest structural difference is already visible here: five schools versus seventy-plus. Every RMS CET seat is fought over by the whole country competing for five campuses. AISSEE spreads candidates across dozens of schools with state quotas, which softens the per-seat pressure considerably.
| Detail | AISSEE (Class 6) | RMS CET (Class 6) |
|---|---|---|
| Total questions / marks | 125 questions, 300 marks | 200 questions, 200 marks (written) |
| Duration | 150 minutes | 150 minutes (2h30) |
| Sections | Maths 50Q/150 marks; Language 25Q/50; Intelligence 25Q/50; GK 25Q/50 | English 50 (qualifying only); Intelligence 50; Maths 50; GK & Current Affairs 50 |
| Per-section qualifying | None — selection on total score | Yes: 40% in Intelligence/Maths/GK; 35% in English |
| English in merit? | Language paper counts fully | English is NOT counted in the final merit list |
| Interview | None | 20 marks — added to written score |
| Medium | 13 languages/mediums | Bilingual (Hindi + English) |
| Written standard | Class 5 level | Class 5 level |
Three things to absorb here, because each one changes preparation:
1. Maths is half the AISSEE paper — but only a third of the RMS merit. In AISSEE Class 6, Mathematics carries 150 of 300 marks. A maths-strong child can bank half the paper; a maths-weak child starts with a serious handicap. In RMS CET, only Intelligence, Maths and GK count toward merit (English must be cleared at 35% but adds nothing to your rank), so Maths is one-third of the merit total. Verdict: a child weak in Maths faces a harder AISSEE; a child strong in Maths finds AISSEE more rewarding.
2. RMS CET can fail you section by section; AISSEE cannot. This is the toughest feature of RMS CET. You need 40% in each of Intelligence, Maths and GK (plus 35% in English). A student scoring 90% in three sections but 35% in GK does not qualify. AISSEE has no sectional bar — a child can be carried to selection by total score. Verdict: for an all-rounder with one weak subject, RMS CET is the harsher exam.
3. RMS CET has an interview; AISSEE does not. Twenty marks may sound small, but in a merit list decided by single marks, a confident interview can move a borderline candidate into a seat. It also means the RMS process tests personality and communication, not just OMR speed. AISSEE selection runs through the written exam, medical fitness and AISSAC e-counselling — no interview stage at all.
| Detail | AISSEE (Class 9) | RMS CET (Class 9) |
|---|---|---|
| Total questions / marks | 150 questions, 400 marks | Two papers of 100 marks each |
| Duration | 180 minutes | 150 minutes (2h30) |
| Sections | Maths 50Q/200 marks; English 25Q/50; Intelligence 25Q/50; Gen Science 25Q/50; Social Science 25Q/50 | Paper 1: English 50 + Hindi 20 + Social Science 30; Paper 2: Maths 50 + Science 50 |
| Per-section qualifying | None — total score | Yes: 50% in each paper |
| Interview | None | 50 marks — added to written score |
| Medium | English only | English only |
| Written standard | Class 8 level | Class 8 level |
The pattern sharpens the same contrast. AISSEE Class 9 again pours half its marks into Maths (200 of 400). RMS CET demands 50% in each paper — not per subject, per paper — which is a gentler bar than the Class 6 sectional system but still a floor AISSEE does not have. And the Class 9 interview is a full 50 marks, nearly a quarter of the written total: personality, general awareness and confidence carry real weight in the RMS final merit.
“Tougher” is not one number — it depends on who your child is:
| If your child is… | The tougher exam is… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong in Maths, average elsewhere | RMS CET | AISSEE rewards Maths at 50% of marks; RMS dilutes it and adds sectional floors |
| Weak in Maths, strong elsewhere | AISSEE | Half the AISSEE paper is Maths; RMS’s merit is spread evenly across three sections |
| Strong in one subject, weak in another | RMS CET | Sectional qualifying marks punish uneven profiles; AISSEE’s total-score system forgives them |
| Good speaker, confident personality | AISSEE (relatively) | RMS’s 20/50-mark interview rewards exactly that — an advantage you hold in RMS |
| Targeting any seat, anywhere | RMS CET | Five schools versus dozens; the seat maths is brutal |
| Needing the medium in Hindi/regional language | AISSEE | RMS CET Class 9 is English-only; AISSEE Class 6 offers 13 mediums, RMS Class 6 only bilingual |
Notice that for most realistic profiles, RMS CET is the structurally tougher exam — fewer seats, sectional floors, and an interview stage. AISSEE is the more “coachable” exam: no sectional traps, huge school network, and a Maths-heavy paper that rewards focused preparation. That is also why many families treat RMS CET (13 December) as the trial run and AISSEE (31 January) as the main event — the same syllabus covers both, and the RMS experience feeds directly into AISSEE preparation.
If your child is eligible for both, the calendar makes the decision for you:
One caution: eligibility windows differ slightly — RMS CET Class 6 accepts up to age 13 while AISSEE caps at 12 (as on 31 March 2027). A 12-and-a-half-year-old may be eligible for RMS CET but not AISSEE. Verify the date-of-birth arithmetic against the birth certificate before paying any fee.
Which is tougher, AISSEE or RMS CET? RMS CET is structurally tougher: it has per-section qualifying marks (40–50%) that can eliminate an otherwise strong student, an interview stage (20 marks for Class 6, 50 for Class 9), and only five schools for the whole country. AISSEE selects on total score with no sectional bar and spreads candidates across dozens of schools. But AISSEE weights Mathematics at 50% of Class 6 marks, so a maths-weak student may find AISSEE harder.
Can a student appear for both AISSEE 2027 and RMS CET 2026? Yes. The exams are on different dates — RMS CET on 13 December 2026 and AISSEE expected on 31 January 2027 — and the syllabi overlap heavily, so one preparation plan covers both.
Does RMS CET have an interview round? Yes. RMS CET includes a 20-mark interview for Class 6 and a 50-mark interview for Class 9, added to the written score for final merit. AISSEE has no interview; selection is through the written exam, medical fitness and e-counselling.
Which exam has more seats — AISSEE or RMS CET? AISSEE covers far more schools: 33 legacy Sainik Schools plus approved New Sainik Schools across India. RMS CET covers only the five Rashtriya Military Schools (Chail, Ajmer, Dholpur, Belgaum, Bengaluru), so competition per seat is stiffer.
Is there negative marking in AISSEE or RMS CET? No. Neither exam has negative marking. Wrong answers and blanks both score zero, so every question should be attempted.
Which exam should we prioritise if eligible for both? Prioritise by calendar: apply for RMS CET before 20 October 2026, prepare with the same syllabus for AISSEE in January, and treat the December exam as a full-dress rehearsal for the bigger January paper.
